Penmath — Handwriting Maths

Penmath

Penmath turns your iPad into a real maths notebook your child writes in — by hand, with the Apple Pencil. On a ruled, workbook-style page your child sees a simple sum and writes the answer themselves. Penmath reads each digit right on the device and coaches in real time, so children practise their maths and their handwriting at the same time.

Designed for ages 4–7 (reception through KS1). A free download to start, with a single optional Unlock Everything purchase — no subscription, no ads.

How it works

  1. Your child sees a sum on a notebook page (e.g. 3 + 4).
  2. They write the answer by hand with the Apple Pencil.
  3. A kind on-device tutor checks it:
    • Correct → it locks in with a ⭐ and a green tick.
    • Wrong → a gentle red cross — no scolding; press and hold it to clear and try again.
    • Not sure what they wrote → it softly asks “is it a 7? try again” rather than marking a real answer wrong.

Tap New for a fresh worksheet anytime. Finished worksheets are kept so your child can revisit them.

What’s free / what’s unlocked

  • Free: single-digit addition, all difficulty levels, unlimited worksheets.
  • Unlock Everything (one-time): multi-digit answers, subtraction, multiplication, and future content.

Requirements

iPad with Apple Pencil, running a recent version of iPadOS.

Privacy

Penmath has no accounts and collects no personal data or identifiers. Your child’s handwriting and worksheets never leave the iPad — recognition runs entirely on-device. To improve the app we record only anonymous, non-identifying usage analytics (which features get used), never anything your child writes, and never for ads or tracking. It works fully offline. See our Privacy Policy.
